The economic impact of the ipl

Akash Guruprakash

Each year millions of Indians wait for the IPL to start. The IPL or the Indian Premier League is the biggest T20 cricket league in the world. But other than bringing innumerable amounts of joy to the people of India, it also has an economic impact.

In 2019, the IPL was valued at roughly ₹47,500 crores. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the valuation dropped to about ₹45,800 crores, which is still pretty high. The last time there was a drop in the IPL’s value, was in 2014. One thing similar to 2014 and 2020 was that the IPL was played in the UAE. This shows how much IPL is impacted by the fact that it’s not played in India. The amount of money that is generated solely from ticket revenues piles up to about 160 crores, another revenue flow that has been affected by the pandemic.

All that we as spectators and cricket lovers get to see is the game and glamour that is shown to us, but the IPL is a lot more behind the scenes. Preparations for the IPL start months before it starts. The IPL generates a lot of employment every year. Hotels, transports, broadcasters, security, merchandising, advertising are just a few of the industries that have a massive inflow of revenue during the IPL season.

So that, in a Nutshell, is the economic story behind the biggest annual cricket league in the world.
