F.R.I.E.N.D.S., even 25 years after its release, is one of the most popular TV shows worldwide. The humorous yet witty remarks, chaos, and love lives of the six main cast members make the show amusing for its viewers.
Another reason why people love the show so much is also because of its normality; it shows the lives of six regular people who, despite the hardships in their lives, grow close to each other and share their good moments together.
However, it was not only the six main cast members but it was also the supporting actors like Gunther, Janice (a bit annoying but I think we all can agree the show wouldn’t be the same without her and her laugh), and Jack Gellar who made us love the show. However, these are only the characters we love, there were definitely some that we found annoying and did not like as part of the show.
Here is a list of the characters we hated (yet secretly can't live without) on Friends:
(At the end of their paragraphs, I would rate them on 10 based on their character, with 10 being the worst)
1. Emily Waltham –
Her first scene in the show was enough to make everyone skeptical of her. Emily was introduced as a cranky and bad-tempered character. She started dating Ross and in very few weeks even got engaged to him. Ross then says the wrong name at the altar, Rachel. He tries to win Emily back many times and she, of course, was not willing to give him a second chance. She shows her true colors when she gives Ross an ultimatum – getting back with Emily or continuing to stay friends with Rachel. This definitely irritated the audience mainly because they wanted Ross and Rachel together and anyone getting in the middle of that would not be met well with. Well, at least Ross chose correctly.
I rate Emily an 8 out of ten.
2. Judy Gellar –
Judy is Monica and Ross’s mother but she is nothing like her husband, Jack. He is a funny character and makes all of his scenes extremely entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Jack is a fan favourite but the same can't be said for his wife. Judy constantly digs at Monica and very obviously favors Ross, treating him like a golden child. Although this is shown in a comical manner, it is a horrible way to treat your child.
I rate Judy a 5 out of ten.
3. Eddie Menuek –
Joey and Chandler are one of the most iconic TV friendships. They used to live together for a long time before Joey moved out to live in his own apartment. Seeing Joey move out of their apartment was pretty disheartening. All we could hope for was that Chandler would at least get another good roommate, he did not. Eddie seemed completely normal at first up but then Chandler realized that they had nothing in common – he didn’t like playing foosball or watching Baywatch, both of which Joey loved, and Eddie just got crazier when his ex-girlfriend Tilly came to return his goldfish. He accused Chandler of having an affair with her and killing his goldfish, which he later replaced with a goldfish cracker. Chandler would repeatedly ask him to leave but he wouldn’t. Finally, he and Joey found a way to get rid of Eddie and start living together again.
I rate Eddie a 9 out of 10.
4. Ursula Buffay –
Phoebe and her twin, Ursula never got along. Phoebe constantly tries to reconnect with her but ends up disappointed and rejected. Ursula withholds information about their biological mother. In the group, Phoebe and Joey were very close friends, however, Ursula got between them. She lies to her fiancé and pretends to be a completely different person with him. She did have a difficult childhood but so did her sister and the difference between how they turned out is remarkable. Phoebe became a fun and loving person while her sister was the polar opposite.
I rate Ursula a 9 out of ten.
5. Kathy –
Kathy was a funny and smart actress. When she started going out with Joey, nobody thought it would be anything special, but the real story was between her and Chandler. Chandler could not let go of his feelings for Kathy but he didn’t want to betray his best friend either. Later on, he and Kathy got together and without upsetting Joey but it all went south when he attended a play of hers. Chandler got jealous of her co-star, who Kathy claimed she had nothing with but she then cheats on Chandler with him. All of this shows that Kathy never cared about Chandler as much as he did and she ended up breaking his heart.
I rate Kathy a 10 out of 10.
6. Amy Green –
Amy is Rachel’s sister and they have never been close. She was a spoiled girl and time didn’t change her attitude much. She would only come to meet her sister when she needed a favour. Her first appearance in the show was after Rachel had a baby and the first thing she asked was, “Do you have a hair straightener?” even though they hadn’t seen each other in a while. She didn't even learn her niece’s name but expected to be in charge of her in case something happened to Ross and Rachel. Amy is irresponsible and self-absorbed but it is these character traits of hers that make her episodes extremely entertaining and fun to watch.
I rate Amy an 8 out of 10.
7. Barry Farber -
Barry is an orthodontist and he was supposed to marry Rachel Green, but she ends up leaving him at the altar. Later on when they meet, she finds out that Barry is engaged to her maid of honour, Mindy. She also finds out that he had cheated on her with Mindy many times, he then cheats on Mindy with Rachel too. Barry even told everyone that the reason Rachel left him at the altar was because she was insane and had syphilis, just so that he wouldn't be too embarrassed. He was an awful and selfish man, but it was because of him that Rachel walked into the coffee shop in the first episode, which is how the show began.
I rate Barry a 10 out of 10.
