Greenwood Charities: Rooted in Kindness

RATION SQUARE

Ration Square is a student-run initiative that brings together students from schools and

communities all across Bangalore to raise funds for the distribution of ration kits during these testing times. It was founded by Greenwood High student Anvi Mittal and has Vice- Presidents

Christina Paul and Riddhi Bansal. They aim to supply ration kits amongst the ones most affected by the current pandemic like daily wage workers, migrant labourers, old age homes, orphanages, special children homes. They are looking out for the ones who have nowhere to look in lockdown. No mouth goes hungry on the watch on Ration Square.

Each kit weighs 10 kgs and costs a total of INR 500. It contains the essentials: rice, atta, dal, oil, along with chili and turmeric powder. Steadily picking up steam, they have raised 2.8 Lakh Rupees, and have had four events where they distributed 500 kits, among migrant labourers. Just this Saturday, 13th June 2020, Ration Square held two events, one in KR Puram and the other in Kadugodi, where they distributed 75 kits at each place.

SHARE A SQUARE

Share A Square is a unique initiative founded by Greenwood’s very own Edha Singh and Sahana Athreya from Inventure Academy. Share A Square tackles a problem most of us don’t even think about- the plight of the needy in the colder months- and they do so in an impossibly heart-warming way. This organisation is the poster child of the reasoning: “small gestures add up to unexpectedly big results.” They don’t ask for much yet they weave wonders with what they get.

Share A Square takes in 6x6 inch squares of knitted or crocheted wool and turns them into beautiful patchwork blankets to distribute among the less fortunate for the winter. Anyone can submit! For people who want to help but are unsure where to start, Share a Square is here to help. They simply want to spread their passion for crocheting and knitting, and allow people a chance to learn something new this quarantine, while contributing to the society in a tiny but significant way.

SPORTS FOR A CAUSE

Sports For A Cause does not play around with its name and is simply as it states, sports for a cause. It was founded by Sriram Chidambaram of Greenwood High. This initiative wants to make sports for everyone. They stress the importance of good equipment for sports and aim to bring that good equipment to children who cannot afford it. They raise money to encourage underprivileged teenagers in participating in sports. They also donate sports jerseys and sports shoes to children who need them.

Sports For A Cause has collected 45 pairs of shoes so far, which have been packed and sent to the Oscar Foundation, and they hope to go much further than that. Sports For A Cause has a clear goal: a person’s background should not stop them from experiencing the beauty of the game, and this drive wants to remove all obstacles that prevent someone from doing so. Sports For A Cause aims to make sure that where you come from does not affect where you will go.
