Its been months sitting at home and after being bored of everything, I would switch on the TV and go to news channels. In the past six months, I have watched news programs so much that now I even know names of anchors and reporters on different news channels. I have seen the headlines go from Corona in India to Tablighi Jamaat debates, Vikas Dubey to death of some really famous celebrities, Justice for Sushant Singh Rajput to Kangana Ranaut’s Office getting Demolished, Hathras Case to Bihar Elections and then finally look at people debate on how Shashi Tharoor said something negative about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Pakistan’s Platform.
Over these six months I have realized that only trending matters/crimes reach the headlines or are shown as Breaking News but how many days the same news continues to be shown depends again on viewers and TRP (Television Rating Points). But yeah, The Indian Media is growing large and fast due to the speed at which we respond to every matter or how aware are we. I can say that the Media even though has freedom in India, is yet not free. They are divided into 2 large categories- one which supports the Right-wing (BJP) and the other side which is obviously opposing the right-wing. But the good part is that the officials are forced to take some action against the crime once the public gets mad about it.
Recently a very mournful incident occurred in Hathras, something even worse than Nirbhaya case which happened back in 2013, where a 19 year old girl was raped and then the police did her last rites when no family members were present. Social Media platforms were flooded with #Dalitlivesmatters and #JusticeforManisha but the question is “how many days?” Back in 2013 when Nirbhaya Incident occurred people protested for days in front of India Gate, New Delhi but was Hathras Case in People’s mind just for a few days.
Recent NCRB ( National Crime Records Bureau) reports show that crimes in India is still continuing to grow with most of them being Crimes against Women and Children.
Acid attacks are still continuing because regular acid is still sold at hardware shops without a single question. Rapists who raped minors are being left open saying that the girls ran away on their own wish in Rajasthan. When Indians stand united, we can force the government to make reforms, but the problem is that our generation will only react to something if it is trending. And the politicians who search for their own personal benefit in everything that happens in our nation.
It was good to see citizens standing together for Hathras Case so quickly and seeing the case go to CBI but what about other horrifying cases that have also happened in the last few weeks or months.
We talk of ‘equality’ but does anyone talk about the Sadhu who was burned alive in Karauli, Rajasthan or the Sadhu who was shot dead in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh?
Not a single person would have seen the horrifying incident of Palghar Mob lynching which happened right in front of policemen and the police could do nothing about it. I am not biased towards a specific group of people but when we talk of equality, it means we should also equally raise our voice against all crimes that happen which would force the government who take stricter actions. We should spend some time knowing the case and then taking our stance.
#JusticeforSSR (Sushant Singh Rajput) continued to be displayed on news channels continuously for months and then shifted to Rhea Chakraborty and Deepika Padukone leaving behind important matters like the economy and Covid-19 which has probably killed more than a lakh people now. No one stood against The DGP in Madhya Pradesh who was seen beating up his wife in a video and then said that it was his personal and internal affair. I wont call this the lack of awareness and knowledge, but this is unfair. We talk of equality and then only stand for crimes against women and weaker section of society and that is the day we are promoting inequality.
What we should do is make sure that we get our judicial system back on track by taking up any big matter in the country as responsible citizens and also making sure that we do not take up the law and order in our hands and make sure that our police officers stand with the victims and see that the crime is never repeated at least in his/her jurisdiction.
